How a Bath College T Level Student is Building a Career in Software Development

26 August 2025

Abigail A is a T Level student from Bath College, one of our proud WEIoT partners. Her story shows just how much impact technical education and real-world experience can have. After first discovering her interest in computing back in secondary school, Abigail went on to complete a T Level in Digital Production, Design and Development. Over the two years, she built not just technical skills, but confidence, direction and a real sense of purpose. Now, she’s focused on building a career in software development.

“Back in secondary school, I took GCSE Computer Science and discovered two things: a love for programming and a curiosity about how computers work. Fast forward two years, and I’ve completed my T Level in Digital Production, Design and Development. This course has helped me grow both technically and personally. With the support of my teachers and hands-on placements, I explored different career paths and became more confident in my communication and decision-making. I now feel more capable in my social skills, particularly having the courage to start conversations, which I once found difficult. I’m still learning how my words and actions affect others, and I’m becoming more mindful in how I work with people. I feel ready for the next step, with a clear ambition to pursue a career in Software Development.”

Abigail achieved a lot during the course. She passed the Microsoft SC-900 certification, was awarded Computer Science Student of the Year, and earned a B in her first-year exams. She also gave her time to volunteer at open evenings, joined a women-only virtual work experience, and attended several careers fairs. Her final exam was a three-month software development project, which motivated her to take on her own personal tech projects, including learning how to repair mobile phones.

“These experiences not only deepened my interest in technology but also allowed me to turn ideas into tangible results.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing. One of the biggest challenges she faced was figuring out how she learns best.

“Balancing coursework with my mental wellbeing taught me how to prioritise and pace myself, ultimately leading me to seek an ADHD assessment for better support.”

Another key moment for Abigail was applying for a Degree Apprenticeship.

“Although I reached the final stage, I was placed on a reserve list. This experience encouraged me to explore full-time job opportunities while keeping my university offer as a backup, reminding me that setbacks often open doors to new opportunities.”

Her two industry placements gave her a real-world insight into how the tech world operates. One was with a web development company where she designed and built websites. The other was with an IT solutions firm, where she assisted with system installations and visited client sites.

“These placements gave me valuable insight into how businesses operate behind the scenes and how teams work together toward shared goals.”

Looking back on everything she’s achieved, Abigail said:

“This course has given me not just skills, but direction, experience, and the confidence to keep moving forward.”
